Studying brings with it many new opportunities - and this includes the question of how you can finance your time at university. In Germany, there are various options open to you, which can be combined depending on your personal situation.
One of the most important forms of support is BAföG. It is designed to ensure that you can study regardless of your financial situation. The Federal Training Assistance Act enables you to study in a way that suits your abilities and interests - even if you or your family do not have sufficient funds.
In addition to BAföG, there are other options such as scholarships, education funds, loans, part-time jobs or funding programmes. Many scholarships take into account not only achievements, but also commitment or special life paths.

Financing methods besides Bafög
Are you wondering whether you can (still) afford to study?
For many prospective students, financing is a decisive factor in the decision to start a degree programme.
But the topic can also suddenly become important during your studies - for example, if your life situation changes or your studies go differently than planned.
Our student finance counselling service helps you to get an overview of the various support options and to find suitable solutions for your situation together.
Studying costs money - for rent, teaching materials or everyday life.
If you are not entitled to BAföG or have already exhausted your funding options, there are various loan offers that can help you:


Study in the Abroad
Are you planning a semester abroad? You can also BAföG get. Basically, the same requirements apply as in Germany: your place of residence must be in Germany and the university must be recognised abroad.
As studying abroad is often expensive, you should find out about funding options early on. BAföG can be one of them - it is best to have your entitlement checked in good time.
Which BAföG office is responsible depends on your destination country. You can find the relevant contact details using the search function on the Deutsches Studierendenwerk website.
Important: Allow enough time and submit your application early, as processing may take longer.
More Financing options for your stay abroad
For stays abroad - also for shorter internships - the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) various scholarships. Students with disabilities may be eligible for additional funding via NA DAAD received.
Other financing options are Daka (interest-free) and the KfW student loan (interest rates depend on the status). Daka can provide funding for study-related stays abroad of up to 6.000 € can be applied for.

- Send your documents only as saved PDF files.
- Other formats (e.g. ZIP files or links) are not permitted for security reasons. Do not open.
- The maximum file size is 10 MB.
If you exceed this limit, you will not receive a warning - and your e-mail does not arrive.
In this case, your application is valid not deemed to have been submitted on time, even if you receive a dispatch confirmation from your e-mail provider.
